TITLE : Portrait of Lazarka
NAME : Dimitrinka Kouncheva Popova
NATIONALITY : Bulgaria
COURSE : Illustration
Portrait of Lazarka is an image of a Bulgarian girl in traditional costume for the folk custom Lazaruvane. In my portrait I depart from the purely naturalistic and photographic forms and try to express the theme in unusual and original way. Inspired from the folk tradition I have created an emotional interpretation of the beauty of the Bulgarian lady and our national dress. I have combined purity of lines with pictorial and artistic outlines. The Bulgarian custom Lazaruvane is practiced on the Christian holiday St. Lazarus Day. The custom is of love-marrying nature and young lasses called Lazarki take part in it. The ritual clothing of Lazarki is characteristic - wedding festive clothing - red coat, white headcloth, gold coins as jewelry, adornment. In the portrait I recreate the atmosphere of the folk notions for Lazaruvane associated with spring, youth and desire for fertility.

My country is a magnificent place, full of color, landscapes, traditions, culture and folklore. My inspiration was "La Catrina" (the feminine form of the word catrín, which means "dandy”) that is the quintessential image of death in Mexico. The creation of Jose Guadalupe Posada helped consolidate the celebration of the day of the dead, one of the strongest traditions and unique around the world, to represent the different skulls facets of society. La Catrina has been an inspiration for the Visual Arts, literature, gastronomy and even fashion. Apart from its meaning, this character has helped consolidate the Mexican attitude of laughing at death. Therefore, it is part of our culture and traditions. It helps us understand that it is the completion of a cycle and we are passengers on a journey that leads us to another destination at any time. Death is democratic, at the end, blond, brunette, rich or poor, everyone ends up being skull said its creator "-José Guadalupe Posada.
