Woodworking-Furniture Restoration One-Year Course (n.16)
Condition check my second restoration piece. In Renato’s atelier, along the ceiling there are dozens of old chairs stacked up together and lived through years of stories which have been collected one day, one by one. I’ve picked up a chair which has been normally used for dining table back in 1800. The chair is completely covered in dust and mold which has been formed over the years due to Firenze’s humidity and possible floods to deform the condition.
The chair has been fitted with very rough collections of wood pieces.
Using a wood hammer, gently tap away legs and disassemble the pieces. Some pieces are jointed with a small nails, therefore using a handy saw to slide into a gap and cut the nail.
Once all the pieces have been taken apart, to properly clean use hot water with a sponge to wipe all the dissolvable dust away without being forceful to strip everything down.
Use the chisel, curve and shape the pieces which has been mended by stucco. Stucco is a very soft fiber once it’s hardened, therefore reshaping is flexible using the chisel. Once all the corners and surfaces of the stucco has been hardened, use wood tint to color the spots needed to be tinted.
