This is the shadow stitch technique: you insert the needle from the back and stitch without perforating the surface. In order to give the pattern on the surface, it is important to proceed with the needle at the same depth without perforating the thin leather.

Stitch on the back side (reversed back stitching) so that the needle doesn’t perforate the surface.
