Graphic Design 1-One Year Course 2017

グラフィックコース初日はロゴデザインから始まりました。
社会に出ると必ずと言って良いほど目にするビジネスカード、そしてそれに欠かせないのがなんと言ってもロゴデザインです。
特に一流のデザイナーともなると、名刺一枚にしてもそこから様々な魅力を相手に伝えられます。そんな重要な情報発信源がロゴデザインなのだそうです。
本格的な授業が始まる前に、幾つかアイディアを出す様に言われていたのですが、初日にしてその殆どがボツになりました。

The first day of Graphic Design Course started with logo designing.
Business cards are important tools after leaving school, and logo design is very important part of them.
Logo designs by top-class designers can appeal and transmit necessary information to people. That’s why logo designs are important.
Professor has given us homework to come up with logo ideas before the actual work in the class started, but most of my ideas became useless on the first day.

グラフィックデザインとは、今まで学んできた絵画とは大きく違い、好き勝手自由気ままに筆を走らせて良い訳では無く、相手に「何を」伝えたいのかと言う「情報」を明確に示さなくてはなりません。故に、以前までの様に曖昧な形の発想のままでは制作は出来ないのです。
何度も考え直し、指導を受けた後、漸く一つ目の下書きが完成しました。

The biggest difference between graphic design and painting & drawing is that in graphic design, you cannot just draw whatever you want. Your drawing must clearly present whatever the information you want your counterparty to know. So your work cannot be vague like in painting & drawing.
I thought over many times, and with the professor’s advice, I finally finished my draft.

下書きが完成すると、今度はそれをアプリケーションソフトを使いながら本格的に形にしていきます。
ここで使われるのがAdobeさんのIllustratorとPhotoshopです。簡単な操作から、覚えていれば役に立つものまで細かく教えて頂き、徐々にデジタル作業に慣れていきました。

The logo is created from the draft using Illustrator and Photoshop by Adobe. We went through a lesson on these application softwares to get used to the digital work.

ロゴの種類は少なくとも三つ考えます。一つ目は一目見て相手が即座に情報を理解できるシンプルなデザイン、二つ目は個性を重視した一つ目とは対照的なデザイン、そして最後にその二つとも全く違うタイプのデザインを用意します。その中でデザイン重視のロゴを制作する際に最も注意しなければならない点は、あまり多くの情報をデザインとして入れない事です。いくらデザイン重視とは言え、画面上が混乱する程の細かな作業をしては視覚的に他者を混乱させて仕舞い、最終的に何を伝えたいのか分からなくなります。自己アピールの為のロゴデザインではありますが、自己主張し過ぎるのも時には全く逆の効果をもたらしてしまうようです。

We had to come up with at least three logo ideas. The first one is the simplest design allowing the counterparty to understand the information transmitted from it. The second one is with a unique design, very opposite from the first one. And the third one is totally different from both first and second designs. You must be careful not to try putting too much information when creating a logo attaching importance to the design. It will just confuse others and lose the meaning of transmitting necessary information. It’s important not to overdo it.

グラフィックデザインコースの他にも、教室にはファッションデザインコースを受講している生徒さんがいらっしゃいます。同じ作業スペースを利用している事もあり、お互いの作品を見て意見を交わしたりします。制作に行き詰まる時には、他の方の作品から刺激を受ける事が出来るので、常に新しい発見をする事が出来ます。指導してくださる教授がファッションデザインとグラフィックデザインを兼任しているので、双方の関係性についても学べます。

We share the same classroom with Fashion Design students, so we time to time exchange our thoughts and impressions on each other’s works. When we get stuck in our creation, we always have a chance to get inspirations from each other. Our professor is teaching both Fashion Design and Graphic Design, so we can learn the relationship between these two fields.

デジタル作業の後には初心に帰る為にベーシックレッスンに参加しました。
初回の授業では、個人的に親しみのある油絵の具を使って紙袋をモチーフに描きました。
油画は今までやってきていたのでほんの少し自信があったつもりですが、それも一瞬の事で「え、それってそうなるの？」「筆ってこんな使い方するっけ？」「配色ってこれで良いの？」と言った具合に発見と衝撃の連続でした。それでも久しぶりのアナログ制作だったので、気分転換や新しい勉強になり、とても充実した時間を過ごす事が出来ました。

After I was done with my digital work, I took a basic lesson to go back to basics.
The first lesson was drawing of a paper bag using oil paints that I am familiar with.
I thought it would be a piece of cake for me with my oil painting experience, but that thought was blown away in a minute. There were so many surprises and new findings in the method of drawing itself, the usage of brushes, color balance, etc. This analog work truly became a breath-fresher as well as a new study for me, so I was quite satisfied.

フィレンツェに来て、初めに行きたかった場所がこのウフィツィ美術館（Galleria degli Uffizi）です。ここには美術に興味がない子供からお年寄りまで必ず知っている著名な芸術家の方々の作品が展示されています。元々はかつてフィレンツェで強大な権力を誇っていたメディチ家のコジモ一世が作らせた行政機関の事務所だったそうです。現在ではその建物を利用し、メディチ家がコレクションしていた数々の巨匠達の作品が収蔵されています。例えば世界史の教科書で見るボッティチェリ作の「春」や、美術の教科書でもお馴染みのレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ作の「受胎告知」などを見る事が出来ます。

Uffizi Museum is the first place I wanted to visit in Florence. It exhibits artworks by famous artists that everyone in Florence knows despite of age or interest in art. It originally was a governmental office made by Cosimo I de’ Medici. Now this place is utilized as a museum exhibiting numerous art collections the House of Medici used to own. Very well known “Primavera” by Botticelli and “Annunciation” by Leonardo da Vinci are both exhibited here.

芸術作品に恵まれるフィレンツェですが、その中で必ずと言って良いほど耳にするのが「メディチ家」です。街を歩いていると、所々に同じような紋章を見かけます（金地に赤い玉が配置されている紋章）。また、書店にも彼らの歴史を綴った書籍が数多く並べられています。彼らの一族がこれほどまでにフィレンツェという街に深く関わっているのは、単に当時権力を誇っていただけでなく、ルネッサンス期の芸術を支えていたからだと言われています。現に、ルネッサンス期に名を馳せたミケランジェロやボッティチェリは彼らの庇護を受けていたそうです。その証拠に、メディチ家礼拝堂の中にはミケランジェロの彫刻作品が多く見られました。

Being in Florence, the city of art, you will hear the name “the House of Medici” quite often. Walking around the city, you see their crest (red balls on gold base) here and there. In the bookstores, there are many books about the House of Medici history. It’s said that it is still a big name in Florence not only they had the power and authority back then, but they were actually supporting the Renaissance art in a great deal. In fact, Michelangelo and Botticelli were strongly supported by the Medici.

街に溢れる建築物や芸術作品を調べて行くと、自然と当時の歴史も同時に知る事が出来るので、そこにいるだけで美術史と世界史、両方の知識が増えていきます。ちょっと立ち寄った教会に著名な芸術家の作品があったり、いつも通り過ぎる広場に有名な人物の銅像があったりするので、普段の生活がフィレンツェ歴史ツアーのようで楽しく感じます。

By doing researches on all the artworks I see in Florence, I get to know the history behind them. I am learning art history and the European history at the same time and I like it. There are so many famous artworks in your daily life here in Florence. I enjoy the every day history tour of my own!

個人的に気になったメディチ家の方々について自分なりにまとめてみました。
名前を聞いた時から「うん？メディチってイタリア語で言うmedicinaと何か関係があるのかな？」と思ったら案の定、元お薬屋さんでした。その後の莫大な富を得たきっかけはどうやら銀行業を始めた事だそうです。他にも毛織物産業にも着手し、地位を築きながらルネッサンス期の芸術家のパトロンに成ったようです。色々調べていると、なんとも波乱万丈な一族なのですが、彼らのお陰で現代までに多くの芸術作品が残されていると考えると、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになります。

I am now so interested in the House of Medici, so I created a graphic design for that.
Medici, as its sound shows, used to be a pharmacy selling medicines. They became extremely successful after they started a banking business. They also started a textile business. As they became rich and successful, they became a patron for many Renaissance artists. It seems like their history had many ups and downs. I simply want to appreciate their achievement of leaving us so many great artworks.
