I am a 2nd year graduate student at Kyoto Institute of Technology.
I am studying architecture in Japan. In my university assignments, I am limited to designing only basic floor plans and rarely think about furniture and materials. However, it is necessary to design a concrete living space, and I have always wanted to learn how to do so. Architecture and furniture are inseparable when it comes to space creation. I chose the interior design course because I wanted to learn as much as I could about this.

Santa Maria Novella Church
After school on Monday, we went to the Church of Santa Maria Novella. From the lancet arches and stained glass decorations, it is clear that the church is a Gothic building, but it is not overly decorated, and I got the impression that it is a calm and quiet Gothic building.
I personally love the cloister garden next to the church. I felt at home in this quiet and spacious space, which is in sharp contrast to the bustling streets of Florence. For me, living in Kyoto, it was like going to the Kamo River for a refreshing walk.

Classroom
The teacher is teaching us how to read a blueprint. He said there is a rule that when drawing furniture, the front view should be drawn on top of the floor plan, and the elevations should be drawn on each side. When I was studying architecture in Japan, there was no such rule, so I learned a lot.

This is a simple model of the furniture I am designing, made with glue sticks, copy paper, and masking tape that I had on hand.
There was also a way to do modeling in Vectorworks without making a physical model. I thought it would be faster and more beneficial for me to actually make a model, study it, and show it to my teacher for advice, rather than spending time learning how to use Vectorworks. The teacher was very complimentary of this method, and I was able to move on to the next step quickly.

After-school lunch
This is a picture of when I had lunch using the meal ticket I received. I went out to eat with my classmates. The restaurant is called “Gusto Leo” and they serve really big pizzas.
Depending on the restaurant, you can eat up to 10€ with a meal ticket here. If you order more than 10€, you can use your meal ticket by paying the additional amount.

Classroom
This is a photo of the class when the teacher showed us samples of materials. He explained what kind of materials he would use for flooring. There were many things that were hard to imagine and that would not be popular among Japanese people. I was imagining, “But if I were to use this…. I could imagine furniture that would be “an oddity” to the Japanese taste.

Farewell party
Since this was Mr. Y’s last class of the day, we all took a commemorative photo with the teachers. I only had two weeks with Mr. Y, but we still became good friends and were able to build a relationship that I would definitely like to meet him again. I enjoyed our conversations about interior design.

Free participation. With an interpreter, we strolled from the Loggia to the Pitti Palace in Florence. She explained about the sculptures in Loggia and told us about the history of the city.
During the walk, we were able to take beautiful photos of the view of Ponte Vecchio.

Cultural course (leather bag making)
On Friday morning, we made leather bags, which we had signed up for as a cultural class. It was the first time for me to work with leather, but I had often used a regular sewing machine, so I was happy to receive compliments. 3-week-old students who have been learning how to make leather goods worked together with us. It was very interesting to see all the paints, glues, and tools that I had never seen before.
